Description

In this episode:

  • The pathway for suspected OSA in a patient is not simply to do a sleep study and prescribe a CPAP
  • Sleepiness is a complex issue and we need to explore the clinical context and other possibilities before arriving at the decision to perform a sleep study
  • GPs need to know how to use and interpret the results of a home sleep study and will probably need the input of a sleep physician to translate the results into a meaningful management plan
  • A Level 2 12-channel study is most informative and Medicare rebatable if the patient fits the criteria. However, GPs need to be able to interpret the results to ensure they are valid
  • Commercial vehicle drivers with sleepiness should be referred to sleep physicians
